A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Ms. Patsy Bobo and Mr. Joe McGlamery; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Awards began in 1989 and more than 700
Bulloch County citizens have received public recognition for service to their
community; and
WHEREAS,
the awards began when Ms. Patsy Bobo and Mr. Joe McGlamery saw the need to
recognize and to encourage local volunteers for their unselfish devotion to
helping others; and
WHEREAS,
the Deen Day Smith Awards are named after one of Georgia's greatest
philanthropists, whose first husband was Mr. Cecil B. Day, a native of Bulloch
County; and
WHEREAS,
the Statesboro
Herald is chief underwriter and principal
sponsor of the awards program, but it is the contributions of many other local
businesses and individuals that have elevated the awards to their present
status; and
WHEREAS,
citizens honored with these awards serve their community in many capacities,
including working with organized groups or with single agencies, and loving
commitment to their neighbors during times of great need; and
WHEREAS,
recipients of these awards are companions in their philosophy of unwavering
volunteerism as they attempt to make Bulloch County a better place in which to
live; and
WHEREAS,
in addition to the individual Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Awards, the
annual event also recognizes several individuals whose contributions to their
community have spanned their lifetimes, and only citizens aged 60 or above are
considered for the Lifetime Achievement Award;
and
WHEREAS, the third aspect of the awards programs is the naming of the Statesboro Herald Humanitarian of the Year Award, which is earned by the person who has provided a wide range of service to the community and demonstrated the compassion to dream, the ambition to work, the will to lead, and the strength to prevail; and

WHEREAS,
the event has drawn keynote speakers from leaders in the business, political,
and cultural arenas of Georgia, and will feature former Georgia Governor Sonny
Perdue during the 2012 program; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. McGlamery is president of the
Statesboro
Herald, chairman of the awards selection
committee, and serves as master of ceremonies for the annual event.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
the Statesboro Herald
for its strong and unyielding financial
support and widespread effort for public awareness and Ms. Patsy Bobo and Mr.
Joe McGlamery for their leadership for nearly a quarter of a century of the
Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Awards.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ms. Patsy Bobo and Mr. Joe
McGlamery.
