A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending Ms. Patsy Bobo and Mr. Joe McGlamery; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Awards began in 1989 and more than 700 Bulloch County citizens have received public recognition for service to their community; and

WHEREAS, the awards began when Ms. Patsy Bobo and Mr. Joe McGlamery saw the need to recognize and to encourage local volunteers for their unselfish devotion to helping others; and

WHEREAS, the Deen Day Smith Awards are named after one of Georgia's greatest philanthropists, whose first husband was Mr. Cecil B. Day, a native of Bulloch County; and

WHEREAS, the Statesboro Herald is chief underwriter and principal sponsor of the awards program, but it is the contributions of many other local businesses and individuals that have elevated the awards to their present status; and

WHEREAS, citizens honored with these awards serve their community in many capacities, including working with organized groups or with single agencies, and loving commitment to their neighbors during times of great need; and

WHEREAS, recipients of these awards are companions in their philosophy of unwavering volunteerism as they attempt to make Bulloch County a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the individual Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Awards, the annual event also recognizes several individuals whose contributions to their community have spanned their lifetimes, and only citizens aged 60 or above are considered for the Lifetime Achievement Award; and
WHEREAS, the third aspect of the awards programs is the naming of the Statesboro Herald Humanitarian of the Year Award, which is earned by the person who has provided a wide range of service to the community and demonstrated the compassion to dream, the ambition to work, the will to lead, and the strength to prevail; and

WHEREAS, the event has drawn keynote speakers from leaders in the business, political, and cultural arenas of Georgia, and will feature former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue during the 2012 program; and

WHEREAS, Mr. McGlamery is president of the Statesboro Herald, chairman of the awards selection committee, and serves as master of ceremonies for the annual event.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend the Statesboro Herald for its strong and unyielding financial support and widespread effort for public awareness and Ms. Patsy Bobo and Mr. Joe McGlamery for their leadership for nearly a quarter of a century of the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Awards.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Ms. Patsy Bobo and Mr. Joe McGlamery.
