A
RESOLUTION
Urging
the Governor to appoint a working group to study the establishment of
"Governor's Academies"; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
the Governor appointed a working group on July 10, 2008, to review a national
report called Tough
Choices or Tough Times to determine how
Georgia might reform its education policies and practices to cause needed change
for its educational system; and
WHEREAS,
the Governor charged the group with creating "a blueprint for change that will
facilitate higher achievement, thereby increasing Georgia's economic
competitiveness through our most valuable resource – our children";
and
WHEREAS,
it would be beneficial for the work of this group to be continued and to examine
the establishment of Governor's Academies; and
WHEREAS,
a Governor's Academy should implement best practices identified by the
Governor's Investing in Educational Excellence Task Force, implement
recommendations of the Governor's Working Group on
Tough Choices and
Tough Times, demonstrate that the cost
models established by the Governor's Investing in Educational Excellence Task
Force work, demonstrate the effectiveness of school level governance,
demonstrate efficiency, serve as a teacher/leadership lab school in conjunction
with a university, and drive economic development; and
WHEREAS,
a working group should make recommendations as to how Governor's Academies
should be structured and where they should be located and should contact and
solicit partnerships with local boards of education, community groups,
businesses, and universities and colleges for each school.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that this body urges the Governor to
appoint a working group to study the establishment of "Governor's Academies."
