A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Morehouse College Police Dispatcher Karen Anita Wells; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Morehouse College Police Dispatcher Karen Anita Wells demonstrated calm under extreme pressure, skillful execution of her training, and compassionate service that helped in the release of four carjack victims on April 25, 2010; and

WHEREAS, on Sunday evening April 25, 2010, Ms. Wells received a call from one of four students who had been carjacked and kidnapped by three men in Atlanta, Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the three Morehouse College students and one American Intercontinental University student were on the campus of Morehouse College when they were carjacked at gunpoint and two passengers were forced into the trunk of the car; and

WHEREAS, upon receiving a call for help from a victim in the trunk, Ms. Wells directed officers from Morehouse College and other Atlanta University Center campuses to the Wachovia Bank in the West End neighborhood of Atlanta, where the carjackers were taking the victims to gain access to their bank accounts with their stolen ATM cards; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Tupelo High School, Ms. Wells earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Jackson State University and attended Georgia State University's master program in criminal justice; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Wells has served as a dispatcher for Morehouse College Campus since 2009 and has 25 years of experience with the Atlanta Police Department, where she served in numerous capacities, including administrative sergeant, security commander, post sergeant, team sergeant, and sector sergeant; and

WHEREAS, POST and GCIC certified, Ms. Wells has been trained in expansive areas of law enforcement, including first response, mass arrest, management, and criminal procedure just to name a few; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Morehouse College Police Dispatcher Karen Anita Wells on her professional, calm, and quick thinking that saved the lives of four carjack victims.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Morehouse College Police Dispatcher Karen Anita Wells.
