RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mary Lathem; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mary Lathem of Covington, Georgia, has earned national recognition by being
honored with the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Award and been named a
Distinguished Finalist; and
WHEREAS,
established in 1995 by Prudential Financial and the National Association of
Secondary School Principals, the Prudential Spirit of Community Award honors
young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary
commitment to service in their community; and
WHEREAS,
a sophomore at Eastside High School, Mary established the Spotlight Performing
Arts Club, a weekly arts enrichment program for underprivileged children;
and
WHEREAS,
for her program, Mary recruited volunteers, developed a curriculum, managed
publicity, and coordinated talent shows and field trips for as many as 35
children at a time; and
WHEREAS,
the success of the State of Georgia, the strength of communities, and the
vitality of this nation depend heavily upon the service of young people and
their willingness to devote their time, energy, and talent to others;
and
WHEREAS,
Mary represents the true spirit of service, peer leadership, and responsibility,
and the State of Georgia looks with great anticipation to the future of this
bright and promising young student.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
Mary Lathem's incredible community service to this state and extend
congratulations for being recognized with the 2011 Prudential Spirit of
Community Award and as a Distinguished Finalist.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mary Lathem.
