A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Dr. John "Doc" Bradley, Sr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. John "Doc" Bradley, Sr., was born on April 18, 1936, in Beaumont, Texas, and this year, he enjoys the distinction of celebrating his 75th birthday; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bradley earned a bachelor's degree from Texas Southern University, a master's degree from Vander-Cook College of Music, and a doctoral degree from Southeastern University, and he completed post graduate studies at Georgia Southern University, the University of South Carolina, and Central Connecticut State University; and

WHEREAS, he was the first African American student to enroll in Georgia Southern University and, in honor of this historical and ground-breaking achievement, a commemorative plaque and oak tree were placed on the school's campus in his honor; and

WHEREAS, under Dr. Bradley's and Dr. Wayne Hoey's direction, the Augusta State University Conservatory Jazz Band was founded in 1998 to provide students in the Central River Area with the opportunity to perform jazz music and gain exposure to various jazz styles; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bradley conducts the Augusta State University Conservatory Jazz Band and the Richmond County School System All-County Jazz Band; and

WHEREAS, affectionately known as "Doc," Dr. Bradley's students credit him with improving their musical skills and inspiring them to attend colleges and universities to pursue careers in music education; and

WHEREAS, a survivor of cancer and a massive heart attack, Dr. Bradley always demonstrates an unquestionable love of and passion for jazz music and providing students with quality jazz music experiences; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Bradley is united in love and marriage to his supportive wife, Winnette W. Bradley, who serves as the director of alternative education for the Richmond County School System; and

WHEREAS, by the example Dr. Bradley has made of his life, he makes this world a better place in which to live, and it is only fitting and proper that he be appropriately recognized during this very special and memorable time of his life.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Dr. John "Doc" Bradley, Sr., for his loving and dedicated service to the members of his family and the students of Georgia, congratulate him upon the grand occasion of his 75th birthday, and extend to him best wishes for continued health and happiness.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. John "Doc" Bradley, Sr.
