A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION BUDGET.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The purpose of this Act is to facilitate the purchase of devices for certain department of education schools, without affecting the department's existing general fund allotment, by specifying that the costs of these devices shall be covered using federal moneys received by the State through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), Public Law 116-136, which was enacted on March 27, 2020, to address the extensive economic impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

     SECTION 2.  Of the amount appropriated by section 37 of Senate Bill No. 126, S.D. 1, H.D. 1, C.D. 1, to the office of the governor to be used for eligible programs pursuant to Public Law 116-136 and associated guidance issued by appropriate federal agencies, the sum of $6,400,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2020-2021 shall be used for the purposes of covering the costs of devices for schools having identified needs and student populations of fifty per cent or greater who qualify to receive free or reduced price lunch for the period from July 1, 2020, to December 30, 2020.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
