HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF land and natural resources to AUTHORIZE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF a MONUMENT IN HILO on state land IN HONOR OF THE LATE SENATOR GILBERT KAHELE.

 

 


     WHEREAS, the owners of the Naniloa Hotel and Tower Development Inc., have dedicated to the family of the late Senator Gilbert "Gil" Kahele, a license in perpetuity over the land area on the point of the Naniloa Hotel dock area; and

 

     WHEREAS, the purpose of dedicating the land is to erect a bronze plaque with wording to be prepared by the Kahele family for the purpose of establishing "Gil Kahele Point", "Kahele Point", or another name selected by the Kahele family; and

 

     WHEREAS, the monument is intended to be constructed and maintained in perpetuity in first class condition by the ownership of the Naniloa Hotel, to include a fishing pole stand with keiki fishing poles, as the late Senator Kahele loved to fish, that will be available for the public at large and guests of the hotel to enjoy without cost; and

 

     WHEREAS, "Kahele Point" looks back toward downtown Hilo and to the north up the coastline with an expansive 270-degree ocean view that symbolizes the expansive dedication of the late Senator Kahele to public service to the State of Hawaii, island of Hawaii, and City of Hilo in all his efforts to commence the revitalization of Banyan Drive; and

 

WHEREAS, the rebirth and restoration of the Naniloa Hotel in 2016 is also part of the revitalization effort of Banyan Drive; and

 

     WHEREAS, the late Senator Kahele was himself a living monument to Hilo and did much in his lifetime for the people of Hilo as well as the island of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Department of Land and Natural Resources is the owner of the land on which the monument is proposed to be established and may authorize the use of the subject property for the monument; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to authorize the establishment of a monument on the point of the Naniloa Hotel dock area in Hilo on state land in honor of the late Senator Gilbert Kahele; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources, Mayor of the County of Hawaii, and owners of the Naniloa Hotel and Tower Development, Inc.
