HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the hawaii state archives to curate and make publicly available the harry b. soria, jr., and kilohana silve collection.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Harry B. Soria, Jr., was a Honolulu-born broadcaster, musicologist, Na Hoku Hanohano award-winning liner notes writer, and record producer who one collaborator called "a walking, talking, living, breathing encyclopedia of Hawaiian music history"; and

 

     WHEREAS, Soria developed an interest in Hawaii's Territorial-era music while attending college in the continental United States and became an avid collector of Territorial-era records; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 1979, Soria began hosting Territorial Airwaves, a weekly radio show on the Honolulu-based station KCCN, where he told stories about Territorial-era Hawaii and played music from his extensive collection; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii's legendary steel guitarist, Bobby Ingano, has credited the music played on Territorial Airwaves with teaching him much of what he knows about steel guitar; and

 

     WHEREAS, Territorial Airwaves celebrated its fortieth anniversary in 2019 and has won numerous awards, including the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts' Krash Kealoha Industry Award and the Moe Keale "Aloha Is" award; and

 

     WHEREAS, Soria was a resident of Manoa, where his wife Kilohana Silve still resides, until his passing in December 2021; and

 

     WHEREAS, after Soria's death, his family donated his extensive record collection and other materials on Territorial-era Hawaii to the Hawaii State Archives; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2022, the Senate concurring, that the Hawaii State Archives is requested to curate and catalogue Soria's records, archives, and other materials as a single collection to be named the Harry B. Soria, Jr., and Kilohana Silve Collection; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, to the extent feasible, the Hawaii State Archives is requested to make the Harry B. Soria, Jr., and Kilohana Silve Collection publicly accessible; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Comptroller.
