HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

naming THE NEW WAImanalo ELEMENTARY and intermediate school building in honor of al lewis.

 

 


     WHEREAS, our community is blessed with exceptional individuals who have a generous spirit, overcome life’s obstacles to live life to the fullest, and enrich the lives of their family and others around them; and

 

     WHEREAS, one such individual was the generous and giving Al Lewis, who was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on May 28, 1944; and

 

     WHEREAS, Al Lewis dedicated much of his time to public service and community involvement and was known for his selflessness in his activities, such as driving kupuna to their appointments, and assisting and organizing countless community events for the benefit of the people in his community; and

 

     WHEREAS, Al Lewis' leadership, breadth of accomplishment, and devotion to public duty is evident through his service as a dedicated member of the Democratic Party of Hawaii, a steadfast supporter of local labor groups such as the Hawaii Government Employees Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, and an eighteen year member of the Waimanalo Neighborhood Board; and

 

     WHEREAS, Al Lewis will be remembered as a pillar in the Waimanalo community for his many philanthropic works, his influence from kupuna to keiki, and his presence and contributions at the Waimanalo Carnival, youth athletic fundraisers, and attendance at Democratic Party events will be remembered and missed; and

 

     WHEREAS, Al Lewis will remain in the hearts of the many he has touched, influenced, and helped, and his selfless contributions will forever serve as a testament to his legacy; and

 

     WHEREAS, a building honoring Al Lewis would stand as a reminder to all who knew Mr. Lewis and future generations of his accomplishments, kindness, generosity, and aloha; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, urges the Department of Education to name the new building at Waimanalo Elementary School after Al Lewis; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent of Education, the Kaiula-Kalaheo Complex Area Superintendent, the Principal of Waimanalo Elementary School, the Chair of the Waimanalo Neighborhood Board, and Florence Lewis.
