HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

HONORING OSWALD K. STENDER FOR A LIFETIME OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE NATIVE HAWAIIAN COMMUNITY.

 

 


     WHEREAS, in 1931, local boy OSWALD KOFOAD "OZ" STENDER, was born in Hauula, Hawaii and received a scholarship to Kamehameha School for Boys, where he met his wife, Kuulei Sequeira, and graduated in 1950; and

 

     WHEREAS, OSWALD STENDER faithfully served our country during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954 as a Marine in the United States Marine Corps; and

 

     WHEREAS, OSWALD STENDER began his career as an assistant property manager at the Estate of James Campbell after receiving his BA in business from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa in 1958; and

 

     WHEREAS, OSWALD STENDER honed his expertise in land management and investment by shaping the development of Kapolei as the CEO of the Estate of James Campbell from 1976 to 1988 and Senior Advisor to the trustees from 1988 to 1990; and

 

     WHEREAS, OSWALD STENDER gave back to his alma mater as a trustee of Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate from 1990 to 1999, where he was instrumental in restructuring the governance and the selection process for trustees; and

 

     WHEREAS, OSWALD STENDER further refined his skills in commercial and residential real estate as a licensed consultant and broker at American Land Company since 1999; and

 

     WHEREAS, OSWALD STENDER continued to support his native Hawaiian roots through such efforts as co-founding a Hawaiian language immersion school on Kauai and helping to produce Israel Kamakawiwoole's second solo album; and

 

     WHEREAS, his humble, hard-working, and forthright nature, coupled with his experience with charitable trusts, won OSWALD STENDER a Trustee seat at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs from 2000 until his retirement in 2014; and

 

     WHEREAS, throughout his career, OSWALD STENDER has volunteered his time and energy as a chair, trustee, or board member of various local entities, including, but not limited to, the Abigail Kawānanakoa Foundation, Aloha United Way, Awaiaulu, Inc., Cash Assets Trust, East-West Center Foundation, Friends of Iolani Palace, Grace Pacific, Hawaii Community Reinvestment Corp., Hawaii Employers Council, Hawaii Tax Free Trust, Hawaiian Electric Industries, Helping Hands Hawaii, Kahi Mohala (Sutter Health Pacific), Kawaiahao Church Advisory Board, Lanikai School Board, Liliuokalani Trust Advisory Board, Mutual Housing Association, Pacific Capital Funds, Pacific Gateway Inc., Pacific Housing Alliance Association, and the Tax Foundation of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, even during his retirement, OSWALD STENDER is tirelessly working to reform the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to restore land and dignity to Native Hawaiians as the current Chair of the Broken Promises working group; and

 

     WHEREAS, OSWALD STENDER has been recognized by the community as the 1994 Hall of Honor awardee, 1998 Kalanianaole Award nominee, 2003 Kamaāina of the Year awardee, 2009 Honolulu Forever Young awardee, and the 2018 Native Hawaiian Advocate awardee, to name a few; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that this body humbly recognizes OSWALD KOFOAD "OZ" STENDER for his many accomplishments and dedication to the betterment of the native Hawaiians and extends to him its warmest aloha and best wishes for his continued success as he continues to advance Prince Jonah Kuhio's vision for the native Hawaiian people.
