STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

DESIGNATING APRIL 28, 2016, AS "WORKERS' MEMORIAL DAY" IN HAWAII IN MEMORY OF WORKERS KILLED, INJURED, OR DISABLED IN THE WORKPLACE.

 

 

 

     WHEREAS, every year in America, thousands of workers are killed as a result of workplace injuries and occupational illnesses; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 2014, according to the most recently available data from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, 4,679 of the nation's workers fell victim to fatal work injuries, while more than 3,657,000 nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses were reported nationwide; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 2014, thirty-one Hawaii workers fell victim to fatal work injuries; and

 

     WHEREAS, it is appropriate to honor and pay tribute to the memory of the courageous and dedicated members of Hawaii's labor force who have been injured, disabled, or killed as a result of workplace accidents; and

 

     WHEREAS, it is necessary to recognize the integrity of the people of Hawaii's workforce and their contributions to economic growth; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Legislature continues to pursue and call for increased workplace safety; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2016, that April 28, 2016, be designated as "Workers' Memorial Day" in Hawaii in memory of workers killed, injured, or disabled in the workplace; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor and the Director of Labor and Industrial Relations.
