HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.R. NO.

70

TWENTY-SIXTH LEGISLATURE, 2011

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

URGING THE commercial AIRLINE INDUSTRY TO EXTEND VARIOUS COURTESIES TO MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES ARMED SERVICES WITH MILITARY ORDERS WHO are transported BY COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT, IN RECOGNITION OF THEIR SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES and as an expression of gratitude and appreciation.

WHEREAS, the men and women of America's armed services, without hesitation, stand fast against those that threaten the security of our nation; and

WHEREAS, while the might of the United States' military is unprecedented, part of this power relies on the ability to transport troops and supplies anywhere around the world at a moment's notice; and

WHEREAS, although the United States' military has a remarkable transportation network, at times it makes more logistical sense to use commercial aircraft to transport troops, particularly if the number of those being transported is small; and

WHEREAS, while it is understandable that airlines charge baggage fees to assist them in dealing with the additional costs they are facing, particularly during the recent economic downturn, applying these additional charges to troops who are fighting in defense of our freedoms could be viewed as inappropriate; and

WHEREAS, in an act of appreciation for their service to our country, the baggage fees currently charged by airlines could be waived for those individuals of the armed services who are traveling on commercial aircraft under military orders; and
WHEREAS, extending additional courtesies to these military personnel, such as first class or business upgrades, when available, at no additional cost and eliminating charges for overweight baggage, would be an additional expression of gratitude and deep appreciation for the sacrifices of the members of the armed services; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, that the commercial airline industry is urged to extend various courtesies to members of the armed services traveling on military orders including the waiving of baggage and excess baggage weight fees and providing first class or business class upgrades when available, as an expression of gratitude and appreciation for service to the United States; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Hawaii's Congressional Delegation, Air Transport Association of America, Inc., and Airlines Committee of Hawaii.
