STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO THE EAST-WEST CENTER.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The East-West Center promotes better relations and understanding among the people and nations of the United States, Asia, and the Pacific through cooperative study, research, and dialogue. Established by the United States Congress in 1960, the East-West Center serves as a resource for information and analysis on critical issues of common concern, bringing people together to exchange views, build expertise, and develop policy options. The East-West Center is an independent, public, nonprofit organization with funding from the United States government, and additional support provided by private agencies, individuals, foundations, corporations, and governments in the region. The East-West Center is located midway between Asia and the United States mainland and features research, residential, and international conference facilities.

The legislature finds that the late United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye was instrumental in obtaining federal funding for the East-West Center. In honor of his legacy, the purpose of this Act is to rename the East-West Center to the Daniel K. Inouye East-West Center.

SECTION 2. Act 82, Session Laws of Hawaii 1975, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"SECTION 2A. Beginning January 1, 2014, the East-West center shall be known as the "Daniel K. Inouye East-West Center"."

SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
