A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the business, cultural, educational, and historical ties between Taiwan and Hawaii are numerous and longstanding. For example:
(1) A Taipei Economic and Cultural Office is located in Honolulu;
(2) Hawaii operates a trade and investment office in Taipei;
(3) Many students from Taiwan study at Hawaii's educational institutions;
(4) Taiwan and Taiwanese organizations have made several investments in Hawaii, including the Chinese Cultural Plaza in downtown Honolulu; and
(5) Hawaii and Taiwan entered into a sister state agreement in 1993.
The purpose of this Act is to appropriate moneys for events recognizing the twenty-fifth anniversary of the sister state relationship between Hawaii and Taiwan and the many social, cultural, and economic contributions that Taiwan has made to Hawaii.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2018-2019 for events recognizing the twenty-fifth anniversary of the sister state relationship between Hawaii and Taiwan.
The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of business, economic development, and tourism for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on June 15, 1215.
