SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO AUTHORIZE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NATIONAL MONUMENT FOR WOMEN IN WASHINGTON, D.C., TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE LEADERSHIP CONTRIBUTIONS OF AMERICA'S WOMEN.
WHEREAS, the 2009 International Women's Leadership Conference, hosted by the State of Hawaii, inspired and empowered women to deepen their understanding of what it means to be a woman leader; and
WHEREAS, the women presenters at the International Women's Leadership Conference were chosen for their exemplary leadership, including business and government executives, development organization leaders, and authors from all over the world; and
WHEREAS, the International Women's Leadership Conference raised the awareness of women in business, government service, and countless other professions to higher sights, higher standards, and exciting and attainable future goals; and
WHEREAS, particularly for women in Hawaii, the International Women's Leadership Conference helped them to realize their potential and collective strength to perform successfully in leadership positions in their own communities; and
WHEREAS, the International Women's Leadership Conference focused on developing strong leadership skills in women by encouraging each conference participant to explore ideas and reach out in home communities to make a difference, day by day; and
WHEREAS, today's women shall bequeath their talents, education, wisdom, leadership skills, and the fruits of their successes to the coming generations, encouraging and enabling women, especially young professionals and students, to reach for the stars; and
WHEREAS, in addition to private and government sector women leaders, the military has had its share of women leaders from the Revolutionary War to the present who have performed courageously in a wide variety of duties; and
WHEREAS, women in the United States have taken leadership roles in every major field of endeavor, often while simultaneously supporting and nurturing families; and
WHEREAS, a November 20, 2000, article in Business Week Online, stated that, by and large, studies show that women executives, when rated by their peers, subordinates, and bosses, score higher than their male counterparts on a wide variety of measures--from producing high-quality work to goal-setting to mentoring employees; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Title 40 United States Code Section 8903, Congressional authorization is necessary to establish commemorative works, defined under section 8902 to include memorials in the District of Columbia, to "reflect a consensus of the lasting national significance of the subjects involved" (40 U.S.C. § 8901); and
WHEREAS, a national monument in Washington, D.C., dedicated to recognizing and honoring the leadership contributions of America's women is an ideal means of enshrining the past achievements of women leaders and inspiring future women leaders; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2010, the House of Representatives concurring, that the United States Congress is requested to authorize the establishment of a National Monument for Women in Washington, D.C., to recognize and honor the leadership contributions of America's women; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the Governor of Hawaii, and Hawaii's congressional delegation.
