1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, On behalf of the citizens of Illinois, the members | ||||||
3 | of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to join | ||||||
4 | the American Stroke Association, a division of the American | ||||||
5 | Heart Association, in celebrating May of 2009 and every May | ||||||
6 | thereafter as American Stroke Month in the State of Illinois; | ||||||
7 | and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Stroke Survivors Empowering Each Other (SSEEO), a | ||||||
9 | first-of-its-kind-in-the-nation group of stroke survivors from | ||||||
10 | all parts of Illinois is meeting in Springfield on May 2, 2009 | ||||||
11 | for the 2009 Springfield Start! Heart Walk in order to create | ||||||
12 | opportunities for people to improve their health by walking and | ||||||
13 | simultaneously raising funds to help fight heart disease and | ||||||
14 | stroke; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the | ||||||
16 | United States, killing about 150,000 Americans each year; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term | ||||||
18 | disability with more than 1.1 million American adults | ||||||
19 | experiencing functional limitations or difficulty with | ||||||
20 | activities of daily living resulting from a stroke; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Americans are more aware of the risk factors and |

| |||||||
1 | warning signs for stroke than in the past, but still less than | ||||||
2 | one in five adults can correctly classify all stroke symptoms; | ||||||
3 | and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Warning signs of stroke include sudden numbness or | ||||||
5 | weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the | ||||||
6 | body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; | ||||||
7 | sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble | ||||||
8 | walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; and sudden | ||||||
9 | severe headache with no known cause; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Stroke leads to the death of more than 7,500 | ||||||
11 | citizens of Illinois each year and disables thousands more; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, New and effective treatments have been developed | ||||||
13 | to treat and minimize the severity and damaging effects of | ||||||
14 | strokes, but much more research is needed; therefore, be it
| ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
16 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
17 | proclaim May of 2009 and every May thereafter to be American | ||||||
18 | Stroke Month in the State of Illinois and urge all the citizens | ||||||
19 | of our State to familiarize themselves with the warning signs, | ||||||
20 | symptoms, and risk factors associated with stroke so that we | ||||||
21 | might begin to reduce the devastating effects of stroke on our | ||||||
22 | population.
