HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, City of Chicago School District 299, serving more
than 400,000 students, is the largest school district in the
State of Illinois and the third largest school district in the
United States of America; and
WHEREAS, Chicago's public schools are served by more than
5,000 elected local school council members, comprising the
largest elected body in the nation; and
WHEREAS, Each local school council is comprised of
students, community members, teachers, and administrative
members of the school community; and
WHEREAS, Civic engagement requires community investment in
government at the local, State, and federal level; and
WHEREAS, Active student participation in the local
electoral process, including local school council membership,
is instrumental in developing thoughtful, committed leaders
for the future; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we urge Chicago's public schools

to continue to engage students in the local school council
process, as this can encourage students to be active civic
participants in adulthood; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
delivered to the Chicago Board of Education.
