HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, City of Chicago School District 299, serving more
3than 400,000 students, is the largest school district in the
4State of Illinois and the third largest school district in the
5United States of America; and
6 WHEREAS, Chicago's public schools are served by more than
75,000 elected local school council members, comprising the
8largest elected body in the nation; and
9 WHEREAS, Each local school council is comprised of
10students, community members, teachers, and administrative
11members of the school community; and
12 WHEREAS, Civic engagement requires community investment in
13government at the local, State, and federal level; and
14 WHEREAS, Active student participation in the local
15electoral process, including local school council membership,
16is instrumental in developing thoughtful, committed leaders
17for the future; therefore, be it
18 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
20SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we urge Chicago's public schools

2process, as this can encourage students to be active civic
3participants in adulthood; and be it further
4 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5delivered to the Chicago Board of Education.
