2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Patrick "Pat" Magoon on | ||||||
4 | his retirement as President and CEO of the Ann & Robert H. | ||||||
5 | Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Pat Magoon will retire on December 6, 2019 after | ||||||
7 | 22 years as President and CEO and over 40 years of dedicated | ||||||
8 | service; he has devoted his entire professional career to the | ||||||
9 | Lurie Children's Hospital and the former Children's
Memorial | ||||||
10 | Hospital of Chicago; he started as an intern in 1977 and worked | ||||||
11 | in several different
operational and leadership positions | ||||||
12 | until he was named CEO in 1997; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Pat Magoon was the primary architect of a | ||||||
14 | turnaround plan which has taken
the medical center from annual | ||||||
15 | operating losses to operating margins that allow for | ||||||
16 | significant
reinvestment in the mission and an AA-/A+ credit | ||||||
17 | rating; the number of children served has increased by 50 | ||||||
18 | percent, outpatient visits have grown by over
70 percent, | ||||||
19 | research funding from the National Institutes of Health has | ||||||
20 | quadrupled, and community
benefit investment exceeds $100 | ||||||
21 | million annually; and
| ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, Under Pat Magoon's leadership, the hospital |

1 | relocated in 2012 to a new facility on
the downtown campus of | ||||||
2 | its academic partner, Northwestern University Feinberg School | ||||||
3 | of Medicine; it has become one of the nation's best children's | ||||||
4 | hospitals,
recognized as a "Top Performer on Key Quality | ||||||
5 | Measures", ranked as a
top children's hospital in the nation, | ||||||
6 | and consistently listed on the U.S. News & World Report Best
| ||||||
7 | Children's Hospitals Honor Roll; it was among only seven | ||||||
8 | children's hospitals
named by Becker's Hospital Review as 100 | ||||||
9 | Great Hospitals in America; the hospital has held the
Magnet | ||||||
10 | Hospital designation by the American Nurses Credentialing | ||||||
11 | Center since 2001, when it
became the first children's hospital | ||||||
12 | in the country to receive this prestigious recognition of | ||||||
13 | nursing
excellence; in 2015, it was re-designated for a fourth | ||||||
14 | time, an honor that less than
one percent of hospitals have | ||||||
15 | achieved; also, in 2015, it was named a Level I
pediatric | ||||||
16 | surgery center by the American College of Surgeons, becoming | ||||||
17 | the first children's
hospital in Illinois to earn this status; | ||||||
18 | and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Pat Magoon has taken a major role in both federal | ||||||
20 | and State
arenas on issues such as Medicaid reform for | ||||||
21 | medically complex children, graduate medical
education, | ||||||
22 | pediatric research, and child safety; he is past Chairman of | ||||||
23 | the Board of Trustees for
the National Association of | ||||||
24 | Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions/National | ||||||
25 | Association of
Children's Hospitals (Children's Hospital |

1 | Association) and has provided a high level of
expertise through | ||||||
2 | service on numerous committees; he is past Chairman of the | ||||||
3 | Board of
Trustees for the Illinois Hospital Association and | ||||||
4 | currently serves on the IHA Medicaid Reform
Task Force and | ||||||
5 | Safety Net Hospital Constituency; he serves on the Chancellor's | ||||||
6 | Leadership
Board of the University of Illinois at Chicago; and

7 | WHEREAS, Pat Magoon has served as a member and a current | ||||||
8 | Director of the Economic Club of
Chicago, a member of the | ||||||
9 | Diversity Council of the Executives Club of Chicago, a member | ||||||
10 | of The
Commercial Club of Chicago, and Chairman of the Heart | ||||||
11 | Ball and Heart Walk Chair of the American
Heart Association of | ||||||
12 | Chicago; therefore, be it
| ||||||
13 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
14 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
15 | we congratulate Patrick "Pat" Magoon on his retirement as | ||||||
16 | President and CEO of the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's | ||||||
17 | Hospital of Chicago; and be it further
| ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
19 | presented to Pat Magoon as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
