2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to | ||||||
3 | congratulate John Duffy of Elgin on the occasion of his | ||||||
4 | retirement as a member of the Elgin Community College District | ||||||
5 | 509 Board of Trustees after 48 years of service; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, John Duffy earned his Bachelor of Arts from Loras | ||||||
7 | College in Dubuque, Iowa in 1956 and his Master of Science in | ||||||
8 | Education from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska in | ||||||
9 | 1961; he also completed post graduate coursework at the | ||||||
10 | University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1967; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, With more than six decades of professional | ||||||
12 | experience and a commitment to education, John Duffy has | ||||||
13 | served his communities as a teacher since 1957 and as a | ||||||
14 | dedicated trustee since 1975; in addition to his primary role | ||||||
15 | as a teacher at Larkin High School in Elgin from 1962 to 1996, | ||||||
16 | he held a number of leadership positions at the school, | ||||||
17 | including student council advisor from 1965 to 1971, chair of | ||||||
18 | English and Foreign Languages from 1969 to 1977, and chair of | ||||||
19 | English and the Reading Division from 1977 to 1996; prior to | ||||||
20 | teaching at Larkin High School, he served as a teaching | ||||||
21 | assistant with the University of Iowa from 1961 to 1962, a high | ||||||
22 | school teacher at Clear Lake Community School District from | ||||||
23 | 1958 to 1961, and a junior and senior high school teacher and |

1 | coach at Presentation Academy from 1957 to 1958; and

2 | WHEREAS, John Duffy has served on the Board of Trustees of | ||||||
3 | Elgin Community College (ECC) since 1975, making him the most | ||||||
4 | senior and the longest serving trustee in the college's | ||||||
5 | history; during his tenure, he has held various roles and has | ||||||
6 | been elected chair seven times; he has also represented ECC | ||||||
7 | locally and nationally; at the state level, he has served as | ||||||
8 | ECC's representative or alternate throughout his years as a | ||||||
9 | trustee; in addition to numerous committee assignments, he has | ||||||
10 | chaired ECC's Federal Relations Committee seven times and | ||||||
11 | served on the Executive Committee nine times; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, John Duffy has served ECC and community colleges | ||||||
13 | at large through a number of leadership roles he held in | ||||||
14 | national organizations; he was elected twice to the Board of | ||||||
15 | Directors of the Association of Community College Trustees | ||||||
16 | (ACCT) and appointed to the Board of Directors of the American | ||||||
17 | Association of Community Colleges (AACC); in addition, he | ||||||
18 | served on the ACCT/AACC Joint Commission on Federal Relations | ||||||
19 | for eight years, which he chaired in 1988 and 1989; and

20 | WHEREAS, John Duffy has been a respected voice in his | ||||||
21 | community and affiliated with a number of professional | ||||||
22 | organizations, including the Illinois Association of Teachers | ||||||
23 | of English, the National Council of Teachers of English, the |

1 | Illinois Classical Conference, the American Classical League, | ||||||
2 | the Elgin Association of School Administrators, the Elgin | ||||||
3 | Teachers Association, the Illinois Education Association, and | ||||||
4 | the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA); | ||||||

| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Throughout his career, John Duffy has been | ||||||
7 | recognized for his leadership, his service to his communities, | ||||||
8 | and his contributions to the field of education, including | ||||||
9 | receiving the Outstanding Young Educator Award from the Elgin | ||||||
10 | Jaycees, being named the Kane County Distinguished Educator of | ||||||
11 | the Year, being listed among the Outstanding Young Men in | ||||||
12 | America, being recognized as an ACCT Outstanding Trustee for | ||||||
13 | the Central Region, receiving the ACCT Central Region Trustee | ||||||
14 | Leadership Award, and being honored as the 2002 ICCTA Trustee | ||||||
15 | of the Year Award; his accomplishments have led to national | ||||||
16 | and international recognition, and he has been featured in | ||||||
17 | multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in | ||||||
18 | American Education, and Who's Who in the World; and

19 | WHEREAS, John Duffy and his wife, Anne, are the parents of | ||||||
20 | four children, Jane, Paul, Sarah, and Steven; therefore, be it
| ||||||
21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
22 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate John | ||||||
23 | Duffy on his retirement from Elgin Community College District |
