2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Donald L. Smith of Rock Island, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on September 29, 2023; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Donald Smith was born to Archie and Mary (Cahill) | ||||||
6 | Smith in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on June 20, 1926; he served in the | ||||||
7 | U.S. Navy; he received an associate's degree from St. Ambrose | ||||||
8 | University; he married Monica Skelley on March 17, 2000; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, In his early twenties, Donald Smith served as a | ||||||
10 | smoke jumper for the U.S. Forestry Service; he worked as a | ||||||
11 | general manager of Chrysler Motors for 40 years, retiring in | ||||||
12 | 1990; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Donald Smith was a member of St. Pius X Church in | ||||||
14 | Rock Island, where he was a lector; he was also a member of the | ||||||
15 | Knights of Columbus and Allouez Council in Rock Island; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Donald Smith was an avid reader and volunteered | ||||||
17 | as a reader for WVIK; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Donald Smith was preceded in death by his wife; | ||||||
19 | his daughters, Michelle Welling and Kimberly Fehr; his sons, | ||||||
20 | Lance Smith and Mark Smith; his grandson, Lance Smith Jr.; and |

1 | his siblings, Jerold Smith and Joanne Smith; and

2 | WHEREAS, Donald Smith is survived by his children, Michael | ||||||
3 | (Mary Jane) Mason and Rick (Sue) Mason; his daughter-in-law, | ||||||
4 | Holly Smith; his son-in-law, John Welling; his grandchildren, | ||||||
5 | Shawn Smith, Chase Smith, Dustin Smith, Cody Smith, Isaac | ||||||
6 | Smith, Elizabeth Anderson, and Zachary Fehr; many | ||||||
7 | great-grandchildren; and his sister-in-law, Judy Smith; | ||||||
