| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Sheldon Liebman, who passed away on | ||||||
4 | September 15, 2020 at the age of 79; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Sheldon Liebman was born to Abe and Sadie Liebman | ||||||
6 | in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 17, 1940; he attended | ||||||
7 | the Wharton School where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in | ||||||
8 | Economics; he later received a Ph.D in American Literature from | ||||||
9 | the University of Pennsylvania; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Sheldon Liebman was a student of Judaism and the | ||||||
11 | Bible; he authored two books, one on Christianity and one on | ||||||
12 | Judaism; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Sheldon Liebman authored 35 articles on American | ||||||
14 | Literature and was a university professor for 57 years, | ||||||
15 | teaching literature, philosophy, grammar, writing, and | ||||||
16 | humanities; most recently, he served as chair of the Humanities | ||||||
17 | Department at Wilbur Wright College until his retirement in | ||||||
18 | 2017; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Sheldon Liebman served for eight years as a member | ||||||
20 | of the Oak Park Elementary School Board and for five years on | ||||||
21 | the Hemingway Foundation Board; he was a member of the Walter |

1 | Mitty Jazz Band, the Pennies From Heaven Trio, and the American | ||||||
2 | Library Association; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Sheldon Liebman had a sharp sense of humor that | ||||||
4 | was matched only by his brilliant mind, his humble way of | ||||||
5 | living, and his love for his faith; of all of his | ||||||
6 | accomplishments, he said he was most proud of having built a | ||||||
7 | summer home in Upstate New York with just a hammer and handsaw; | ||||||
8 | he was an activist, a humanitarian, and an advocate for | ||||||
9 | equality and justice; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Sheldon Liebman is survived by his beloved partner | ||||||
11 | of 30 years, Gail; his children, Sarah (Brian) and Rebecca; his | ||||||
12 | former spouse and the mother of his children, Gale; his | ||||||
13 | grandchildren, Charlotte, Markus, and Micah; his sister, | ||||||
14 | Dianne (Allan); his brother, Marc (Patricia); his nieces, | ||||||
15 | Pamela, Stephanie, and Caroline; and his nephews, Ari, David, | ||||||
16 | Lionel, Simian, Zachary, and Andy; therefore, be it

17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
19 | Sheldon Liebman, and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
20 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
21 | further

22 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
