A HOUSE RESOLUTION recognizing the importance of
the regional campus of Ivy Tech Community College serving
Lafayette, Crawfordsville and Monticello, Indiana.
Whereas, The Lafayette regional campus of Ivy Tech
Community College started as the Tippewa Technical Institute
in 1968 in the arena of health career vocations;
Whereas, The early roots of Ivy Tech in the Lafayette
region are in the Ross Building, recognized by the Indiana
Historic Landmarks Foundation, and was formerly a
tuberculosis sanatorium and a county nursing home before
becoming Ivy Tech's administration building;
Whereas, Griffin Hall is named in honor of George and
Mabel Griffin and through their legacy have established the
Griffin Endowment Fund to provide scholarships to students in
need;
Whereas, Ivy Hall was opened August 2001, consolidating Ivy Tech's campus on the City of Lafayette's southeast side;
Whereas, The Gerald Lampkin Union Apprenticeship Center housing organized labor, including the Indiana Regional Council of Carpenters JATC and Electrical JATC, was established in 2001, providing union trades a home for training new apprentices;
Whereas, The Lafayette regional campus continues to
expand its programs and partnerships, including elements such
as formal transfer and articulation agreements with Purdue
University, Indiana University, Saint Joseph's College, Indiana
State University, Western Governors University, Ball State
University, IUPUI, and Indiana Wesleyan University;
Whereas, Cultural awareness and academic achievement
continues to grow in the Lafayette Community College region
through such programs and partnerships as the Hildalgo,
Mexico, historic agreement signed in 2009, and the annual
Latino Festival, which has drawn over 1,500 people into the
Lafayette campus environment;
Whereas, The Lafayette Campus Library is a partnership
between the Tippecanoe County Public Library and Ivy Tech,
containing both public and college collections, as well as virtual
libraries serving both Tippecanoe County and the greater
regional area;
Whereas, Ivy Tech students can participate in a wide range
of student clubs, organizations and intramural sports through a
partnership with the Lafayette Family YMCA and Junior
Achievement;
Whereas, The Career Service & Student Support Center
serves students and alumni through career exploration, job
zones and boards, career fairs, and job search advising;
Whereas, The White County Instructional Center serves Monticello and surrounding communities with first-year college
courses as well as dual credit courses for area high school
students;
Whereas, The Montgomery County Instructional Center in
Crawfordsville will expand and soon move to a new campus to
serve the growing needs of the eastern and western I-74 corridor
and offer a full associate degree program in business
administration;
Whereas, The Agriculture Program Laboratory and
Corporate Learning Center Buildings have grown and expanded
to serve the students in the Departments of Agriculture,
Workforce, and Economic Development;
Whereas, A new Renaissance Place Instructional Center in
downtown Lafayette serves downtown residents and business,
as well as Purdue University students;
Whereas, The Lafayette Ivy Tech region in 2011 offered
and expanded new programs in areas such as Advanced
Manufacturing, Health Services, Therapeutic Massage, and
Sustainable & Renewable Energy; and,
Whereas, In 2011, nearly 400 graduates realized their
dreams and participated in the commencement graduation
ceremonies in front of over 3,000 of their families and friends:
Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives congratulates and supports the Lafayette regional campus of Ivy Tech Community College in its mission of enabling students and citizens to realize their full potential and supporting regional education and economic development in Indiana.
