SENATE RESOLUTION


     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION memorializing Mayor Tom Jones for his service to the city and community of Linton, Indiana.

            
    Whereas, Mayor Jones cared deeply for his first priority- his wife, Patti, his four daughters, Jodi, Jill, Tomi, and Lauren as well as his grandchildren;

    Whereas, Mayor Jones was a warrior for Linton and the people of Linton. His dedication to making the city better was unparalleled and he always tried to do right, never giving up his love for Linton;

    Whereas, Mayor Jones was successful at bringing economic development and grants to the city of Linton;

    Whereas, Mayor Jones was an outspoken advocate for youth sports, youth, and the need for youth facilities;

    Whereas, Mayor Jones promoted the expansion and comprehensive use of one of the largest tracts of city-owned parkland in the country;



    Whereas, Mayor Jones was a graduate of Lipton-Stockton High School and a 25-year veteran coal miner with the old Peabody Hawthorne Mine where he was active in the United Mine Worker's Union;

    Whereas, Mayor Jones had a passion and natural talent for the game of golf, winning the Greene County Open six times and serving as golf coach at Vincennes University and playing in the Pro Am;

    Whereas, in 2001, Mayor Jones received an Indiana Award for Excellence for his academic and leadership accomplishments;

    Whereas, awards have been many for Mayor Jones who also was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by former Governor Joe Kernan and he's been the recipient of the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Linton Elks;

    Whereas, Mayor Tom Jones served on the board of directors for the Southern Indiana Development Committee and sat on the Greene County Economic Development Corporation's board of directors. He was formerly on the Greene County Solid Waste Management board as well as the Greene County Community Corrections board;

    Whereas, Mayor Jones was the current president of the Indiana Conference of Mayors;

    Whereas, during Mayor Jones' first campaign in 2003, he said, "A mayor should possess human compassion, leadership qualities, interpersonal and organizational skills, negotiating ability, honesty and integrity, and the ability to work with and through others to efficiently and effectively manage a city. Most of all, a mayor should be committed to the needs of the residents he represents;" and

    Whereas, Mayor Jones was a Christian and proud patriot,

who loved his country and supported the local Army National Guard unit in many behind the scenes ways; therefore:

    

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:


SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly memorializes Linton Mayor Tom Jones and remembers his service to the community.
SECTION 2. That copies of this resolution be distributed by the Secretary of the Senate to Patti Jones and the City of Linton.
