A bill to amend 1978 PA 368, entitled

"Public health code,"

(MCL 333.1101 to 333.25211) by adding section 9137.

the people of the state of michigan enact:

Sec. 9137. (1) A pediatrician shall offer a mother during the postpartum period after giving birth a mental health screening that is developed or approved by the department. The mental health screening described in this subsection must be offered until the child reaches the age of 18 months, in intervals determined by the department.

(2) A pediatrician shall provide a mother with mental health resources that are developed or approved by the department. The resources described in this subsection must be provided to the mother not later than 1 month after giving birth to the child and must include information on all of the following:

(a) A list of postpartum mental health conditions and their symptoms.

(b) Treatment options for postpartum mental health conditions.

(c) Support systems for individuals experiencing postpartum mental health conditions.

(3) As used in this section, "pediatrician" means a physician licensed under part 170 or 175 who holds a board certification as a pediatrician.
