1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizes the contributions to the State of Minnesota and internationally of
1.3Rotary International 2020-21 District Governor Thomas A. Gump.
1.4WHEREAS, Rotary International was formed in 1905, in Evanston, Illinois, to provide
1.5important service to the community and in the world; and
1.6WHEREAS, the Rotary Foundation was created in 1917 by Rotary International's sixth
1.7president, Arch C. Klumph, as an endowment fund for Rotary "to do good in the world"; and
1.8WHEREAS, the Rotary Foundation has grown from an initial contribution of $26.50 to more
1.9than $4 billion in contributions that provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards,
1.10and help to build goodwill and peace in the world; and
1.11WHEREAS, the Rotary Foundation, in partnership with the Gates Foundation, the World
1.12Health Organization, and governments around the world, has dedicated efforts to eradicate polio
1.13in the world through immunization, and has achieved a success rate of 99 percent; and
1.14WHEREAS, the Rotary Foundation has focused its efforts on sustainable programs in six
1.15areas: promoting peace; fighting disease; providing clean water; providing improved health care
1.16for mothers and children; supporting education; and growing local economies; and
1.17WHEREAS, the Rotary Foundation has provided more than $3.8 billion in grants to support
1.18these areas of focus; and
1.19WHEREAS, Rotary International is one of the world's largest and oldest nongovernmental
1.20service organizations with 1.2 million members in more than 200 countries; and
1.21WHEREAS, District 5950 currently consists of 63 Rotary Clubs consisting of nearly 3,000
1.22members, who raise funds and volunteer their time for doing good in their local communities and
1.23around Minnesota and the world; and
1.24WHEREAS, the Rotary Foundation has now been doing good in the world for over 100
1.25years now; and
1.26WHEREAS, today Thomas A. Gump is being installed as the 2020-21 District Governor
1.27for Rotary International District 5950; and
1.28WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump and his wife Catherine have been residents of Edina,
1.29Minnesota, since 1999 and their son, Andrew, since 2005 (the "Gump family"); and
1.30WHEREAS, the Gump Family was recently awarded the "Connecting with Kid's Leadership
1.31Award" from Edina Community Foundation (ECF) for its work in hosting youth exchange students
1.32from India, Spain, Belgium, South Korea, Czech Republic and France; and
1.33WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump is the current chair of the ECF and has loyally served the
1.34foundation for several years in various roles including vice-chair and has compiled a comprehensive
1.35Policies and Procedures Manual for the foundation; and
1.36WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump has successfully chaired or co-chaired with others the
1.37ECF/City of Edina's Fourth of July Parade over the past few years; which annually: (i) brings in
1.38an estimated attendance of over 25,000; (ii) features over 100 parade units; (iii) hosts a veterans'
1.39dinner on the evening of July 3rd; and (iv) conducts fireworks at Rosland Park, on the evening of
1.40July 4th; and
1.41WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump has formerly and for several years served on the City of
1.42Edina's Construction Board of Appeals, which he chaired at one time; and
2.1WHEREAS, Rotary International President Mark Daniel Maloney selected Thomas A. Gump
2.2as one of only 19 Rotary leaders from across North America to serve as a participant in the New
2.3Club Development Summit, which Thomas A. Gump has dutifully done; and
2.4WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump last year was the Visionary Lead Founder and Honorary
2.5Charter Member of The Rotary Club of Minnesota Veterans, the first Rotary Club for veterans in
2.6the world, which meets here in the City of Edina, and said club has grown in size to become one
2.7of the top third clubs in term of size in Rotary International District 5950; and
2.8WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump will serve as Rotary International Zones 25B and 29 as the
2.9General Chair of the Zones 25B and 29 Institute, in Minnesota, in September 2021; and
2.10WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump is serving Rotary International Zones 25B and 29 as the
2.11Assistant General Chair of the Zones 25B and 29 Institute, in Houston, Texas, in September; and
2.12WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump is serving Rotary International Zone 29 as its Promotions
2.13Coordinator for the 2020 Rotary International Aloha Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii; and
2.14WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump has served Rotary International Zone 28 as its Assistant
2.15Promotions Coordinator for the 2019 Rotary International Convention, in Hamburg, Germany; and,
2.16its Promotions Coordinator for the 2018 Rotary International Convention, in Toronto, Canada; and
2.17WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump has served on the North Central Presidents-Elect Training
2.18Seminar team for the past few years, and last year assisted this organization by amending and
2.19restating its bylaws and revising and updating its Manual of Policy & Procedures; and
2.20WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump serves on the North Star Youth Exchange Foundation Board
2.21and has done so for the past several years; and
2.22WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump serves on the Rotary 5950 Foundation Board and has served
2.23on the board for a few years in various capacities including as its vice president and has drafted a
2.24comprehensive Foundation Procedures and Policy Manual for the organization; and
2.25WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump will on June 25, 2020, be sworn in as District Governor for
2.26Rotary International District 5950, which contains 63 Rotary Clubs and nearly 3,000 Rotarians;
2.27and
2.28WHEREAS, Thomas A. Gump has been a member in good standing of The Rotary Club of
2.29Edina/Morningside since 2013 and has served it in various capacities including serving as its
2.30president and on its club foundation board, along with sponsoring into membership dozens of its
2.31members; and
2.32NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.33hereby recognizes the contributions to the State of Minnesota and internationally of: (i) Rotary
2.34International District 5950; (ii) its 63 Rotary Clubs and nearly 3,000 members that comprise it; and
2.35(iii) its 2020-21 District Governor Thomas A. Gump; as stated immediately above and thanks them
2.36for their positive impact upon the state of Minnesota and around the world.
2.37BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.38enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.39Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Thomas A. Gump.
