House Bill 730

AN ACT TO CREATE A CRIMINAL OFFENSE FOR CAUSING AN ACCIDENT WHILE USING A MOTOR VEHICLE UNLAWFULLY TAKEN; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  Any person who unlawfully takes a motor vehicle belonging to another and causes an accident shall be guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, shall be punished by imprisonment in the custody of the Department of Corrections for up to five (5) years.  Nothing in this section shall be construed to limit any other provision of law that regulates crimes of motor vehicles.  This shall be a separate crime.

     SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2017.
