A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY

OF THE BATTLE OF FARMINGTON.

     WHEREAS, on May 9, 1862, the Union and Confederate troops met on the battlefield near a hamlet in north Mississippi known as Farmington; and

     WHEREAS, a month before the battle in Farmington, Union and Confederate troops had been engaged in a bloody battle just a few miles north in the town of Shiloh; and

     WHEREAS, in the days following the Battle of Shiloh, the Confederate dead, dying, wounded and survivors were being transported through Farmington on their way to Corinth; and

     WHEREAS, beginning on May 3, 1862, clashes between Union and Confederate forces were fought at Farmington, lasting three days, yet no one would be ready for what became known as "The Farmington Races"; and

     WHEREAS, war was brought to Farmington in full force on the morning of May 9, 1862, when the Union forces, led by Major General John Pope, and the Confederate forces, led by Major General Earl Van Dorn, met just west of the Town of Farmington; and

     WHEREAS, the costly battle left 16 dead, 148 wounded and 192 missing from the Union forces and eight dead, 189 wounded and 110 missing from the Confederate forces; and

     WHEREAS, today, citizens of Farmington and Civil War enthusiasts gather each year to commemorate the Battle of Farmington, entertaining themselves with garden socials, street dances, military demonstrations, a period dance and the reenactment of the battle on the same field upon which the original battle was fought; and

     WHEREAS, following a long-standing tradition, The Farmington Races will be reenacted on September 15, 2012, upon the original battlefield just west of Farmington:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Farmington and on the occasion of its Sesquicentennial Anniversary celebration, commend the entire Farmington community on the renowned annual reenactment of The Farmington Races.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the City of Farmington, Mayor Fortenberry, and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
