House Resolution 106

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE MISSISSIPPI WORKERS' CENTER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS UPON ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY.

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Workers' Center for Human Rights is celebrating 25 years of advocating for the dignity and safety of all workers, a truly momentous occasion for such an extraordinary organization; and

WHEREAS, founded on December 30, 1996, this distinguished nonprofit organization provides numerous programs that enable thousands of Mississippi workers to receive information about their rights under state and federal laws that are enacted to protect them from workplace hazards and discrimination; and

WHEREAS, these outstanding programs include:  the Fannie Lou Hamer Emerging Leaders Program, which has provided hundreds of youth and students with internships and other employment opportunities; the legal advocacy program, which has provided hundreds of workers with legal representation, advice and counsel in their efforts to improve workplace conditions and obtain equal employment opportunities; the housing advocacy program, which has given much needed information to hundreds of tenants who are denied decent housing, to help to improve their quality of life and protect their basic right to humane living conditions; and through its "Knowledge is Power" campaign, more than 35,000 Mississippi residents have received the Center's Know Your Rights manual; and

WHEREAS, in addition, through the organization's work in partnership with other legal organizations, hundreds of students have been afforded more equitable educational opportunities and greater access to better equipped and more technological learning environments, and the center's advocacy has also led to the implementation of zero tolerance policies against workplace hate violence and sexual harassment to change the culture of work; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize exceptional Mississippi organizations, especially those such as the Mississippi Workers' Center for Human Rights, whose

dedication to justice and equal rights brings honor to the organization and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend the Mississippi Workers' Center for Human Rights upon its 25th anniversary, and extend our most sincere wishes for continued success in all of its future endeavors.
