A RESOLUTION COMMENDING SIMPSON ACADEMY BOYS BASKETBALL HEAD COACH JAMES CRAIN FOR HIS OUTSTANDING, DISTINGUISHED AND DEDICATED COACHING CAREER.

     WHEREAS, Coach James Crain, the head coach of the boys basketball team at Simpson Academy in Mendenhall, Mississippi, is a truly outstanding example of coaching success, and he accomplished a remarkable landmark achievement when the Cougars won the 2019 Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) Class AAA Division II State Basketball Championship, as he reached his 1000th victory as a basketball coach; and

     WHEREAS, after student teaching at Mendenhall High School while at Hinds Community College, Coach Crain began his long and illustrious coaching career in 1977, as head coach for Mendenhall's boys basketball team, and during his 23 year tenure there, he amassed an amazing 586 wins, with his 500th victory as a coach coming in 1997, and won two state championships; and

     WHEREAS, after serving as principal at Mendenhall High School for several years, Coach Crain moved to Hillcrest Christian School, where he coached the boys basketball team to continued success for six years, and while there, he accumulated another 167 wins, reaching his 600th career win in 2005, achieving his 700th victory in 2008, and winning three straight state championships; and

     WHEREAS, after garnering the immense admiration and respect of his academic and athletic colleagues across the state for his coaching success, Coach Crain returned to Simpson County to become the head coach of the boys basketball team at Simpson Academy, where he continued his winning ways, and throughout the past nine years, he has amassed an additional 248 wins, capturing his 800th win in 2012, his 900th victory in 2015, and his incredible 1000th win in 2019, and taking home three state championship trophies; and

     WHEREAS, known for his outstanding approach to basketball, Coach Crain has secured his place in Mississippi sports history by establishing himself as an institution on the hardwood, as recognized by his induction into the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame Class of 2018; and

     WHEREAS, throughout his prestigious career, Coach Crain has been supported by his wife, Kathy Crain, and as a man of incredible character and superb stature, he has been lauded for his athletic and coaching success, and his 42 years as a high school coach has produced a phenomenal record of 1001 wins and 326 losses; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend the outstanding career of Coach James Crain, whose passion for coaching and remarkable success have made him legendary throughout the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Simpson Academy boys basketball Head Coach James Crain for his outstanding, distinguished and dedicated coaching career, and express heartiest wishes for continued success in all his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach James Crain and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
