A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MRS. CARLA FALKNER FOR BEING THE RECIPIENT OF THE MISSISSIPPI HUMANITIES COUNCIL'S 2013 HUMANITIES EDUCATOR AWARD AND WISHING HER MANY YEARS OF SUCCESS.

     WHEREAS, Northeast Mississippi Community College's Carla Falkner is the recipient of the Mississippi Humanities Council's 2013 Humanities Educator Award; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Falkner is a committed and dedicated history instructor at Northeast Mississippi Community College located in Booneville, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, the Humanities Educator Award is given annually at the Mississippi Humanities Banquet and hosted by the Mississippi Humanities Council, which is a nonprofit organization focused on providing programs in traditional liberal arts disciplines designed to promote understanding of our cultural heritage and foster critical thinking among other things; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Falkner worked diligently with the council for over 20 years in various positions and has also spent eight years on the Mississippi Humanities Council Board; and

     WHEREAS, when speaking of the works of the Council, Mrs. Falkner has stated that she has "...a great deal of respect for their work and for what they do....They really raise the level of understanding and dialogue in the State of Mississippi."; and  

     WHEREAS, as evidence of her passion for the humanities, she has helped coordinate regular humanities programming at Northeast in addition to the studies that she has created in her history classroom; and

     WHEREAS, as a teacher, she is revered by many of her current and past students for her passion and efforts, Representative William Tracy Arnold, credits her sincerity as an educator in helping him become the man he is today; and

     WHEREAS, more recently, she led a study to explore food related issues and encouraged students to look critically at what they are eating, but in the past she has led studies into more hot topics such as racial reconciliation; and

     WHEREAS, she is supported in many endeavors by her husband, Pat Falkner, their two children and one grandson; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend educators and humanitarians such as Mrs. Carla Falkner who are not only committed to their classroom instruction but social instruction of the masses:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Mrs. Carla Falkner for being the recipient of the Mississippi Humanities Council's 2013 Humanities Educator Award.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Carla Falkner, the President of Northeast Community College and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
