House Resolution 17

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MR. LARRY WAYNE THOMAS, AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.

     WHEREAS, Larry Wayne Thomas, born November 19, 1950, to Andrew and Ruby Thomas, departed this earthly life on December 20, 2011, to enter into eternal rest with his Heavenly Father, bringing great sorrow and loss to his family and friends; and

     WHEREAS, known for his many talents, Mr. Thomas began playing the slide trombone in middle school and continued to play in the band until he enlisted in the military in 1968; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Thomas served in the military until his honorable discharge in 1971, followed by service with the Army Reserves until 1974; and

     WHEREAS, the eldest of his siblings, Mr. Thomas was the protector of his family and would stand watch on the front porch of his mother's home, guarding his sisters as they sat with their potential suitors; and

     WHEREAS, notorious for his enthusiasm about his hobbies, Mr. Thomas was known for his grilling abilities, his understanding of technology, which allowed him to repair computers and cell phones for family and friends, and for his association with the CB world; and

     WHEREAS, an avid bowler, Mr. Thomas began bowling after he enlisted in the military and became a major contender in the sport, traveling the country to play in numerous national tournaments, recruited to play on the professional circuit, and bowling an amazing five perfect games; and

     WHEREAS, dedicated to the sport of football, Mr. Thomas was a football referee through the Mississippi High School Activities Association for many years in the Middle Mississippi Football Association; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Thomas was passionate about fishing and enjoyed being on the water, especially the Ross Barnett Reservoir, and he entered several tournaments, winning first place at the Beginners Tournament at Lake Lincoln in Wesson, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, knowing that a good education is the key to a successful life, Mr. Thomas always encouraged his children, nieces and nephews to pursue higher education, and he constantly promoted the value of a solid education to those he loved; and

     WHEREAS, though he has traversed the river of life, after enduring life's trials and triumphs, to now stand on golden heavenly shores in a joyous reunion with family and friends, the rich legacy of his memory will be cherished forever in the lives of his loving survivors:  his mother, Ruby E. Thomas; daughters, Tara and Lakeisha; sisters, Maxine, Angela, Beverly, Wanda and Evelyn; brothers, Andrew Thomas, Jr., Andrew Bell, Richard and Bobby; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; his friend and companion of 16 years, Grace Jacobs, and her son, Justin Jacobs; and a host of other relatives and friends; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the life of such an outgoing and giving individual as Mr. Thomas, whose friendliness and advice made him a pleasure to be around:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and legacy of Mr. Larry Wayne Thomas, and express deepest sympathy to his family and friends upon his passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Thomas and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
