A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MISS BRITTANY SHERREL MORGAN AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HER PASSING.

     WHEREAS, Brittany Sherrel Morgan, a promising 21-year-old junior at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), departed this earthly life on Sunday, February 20, 2011, to enter into eternal rest with her Heavenly Father, rendering great sorrow and loss to her family and friends; and

     WHEREAS, on a path destined for great success, as she sought to become a hospital administrator, Brittany was attending the University of Southern Mississippi on a full scholarship and was also holding down a full-time job with Forrest General Hospital's Wellness Center; and

     WHEREAS, outgoing, studious and hardworking, Brittany, who finished fourth in her 2008 Wayne County High School graduating class, was full of life and initially began her course of undergraduate studies to be a registered nurse, but she really liked the office part of hospital work so well that she switched majors to go into administration; and

     WHEREAS, in representation of her maturity and her answer to the call to service, Miss Morgan was a regular attendee of Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Waynesboro, Mississippi, where she sang in the choir and also served on the usher board; and

     WHEREAS, her leadership skills complimented her ability to command the respect of her teammates and classmates alike and guide them with humble confidence, as evidenced by her position as manager for the 2005 Wayne County High School Girls Basketball Team that won a state title, and as a member of the 2007 cheerleading squad that also won a state championship; and

     WHEREAS, quite the accomplished academician at Wayne County High School, Brittany earned a number of honors by the end of her senior year, including:  an ACT Scholarship from Jones County Junior College, a scholarship from USM, a $250.00 Beat Four Student Council Scholarship, a $250.00 Beat Four PTO Scholarship and a $500.00 Riverview Scholarship to help cover the costs of her education; and

     WHEREAS, "Brittany Morgan came to volunteer at Hawkins Elementary School the very first week she was in Hattiesburg. Immediately upon meeting her I knew she understood the importance of service, giving back to the community and making a lasting impact wherever you go.  Brittany continued to serve the staff and students faithfully for the next two years.  Every week she came in and simply asked, 'What can I do to help today?'  Not only did she exceed our expectation on any task given, she took the time to instill in elementary school children the values of servant leadership with a smile," said Sharon Miles, volunteer coordinator at Hawkins Elementary School, where Brittany Morgan volunteered regularly; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Larry Sparkman, Director of the Luckyday Scholars Program at USM, of which Brittany was a member, described her as, "A delightful person and student who was making great strides in her life.  She was open to people and the new found possibilities around her and had a wonderfully kind and engaging spirit which was evident by her unforgettable smile."; and

     WHEREAS, though she has now traversed the river of life to stand on golden Heavenly shores, the life that she lived with no bounds, seizing each moment for the value of its worth and in its fulfillment by imparting her selfless service into the lives of others will continue to be cherished by her loving survivors:

parents, Styron and Sherry Morgan; brother, Derrick Morgan; sisters, Candace Morgan and Kawaii Gandy; and a host of other relatives and friends; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the life of such a remarkable young lady, whose time upon this earth was brief, but duly noted with a spirit of service that was a shining example for her peers to mold their own lives after and continues to send out positive ripples of effectuating change from its epicenter:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and legacy of Miss Brittany Sherrel Morgan and extend deepest sympathy to her family and friends upon her passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Miss Morgan and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
