A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE DISTINGUISHED CAREER AND EXEMPLARY LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE MR. CLAIBORNE BARKSDALE PROVIDED AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE BARKSDALE READING INSTITUTE.

     WHEREAS, Barksdale Reading Institute's Chief Executive Officer and exceptional leader, Mr. Claiborne Barksdale, has announced plans for retirement after a remarkably distinguished career and exemplary leadership and service provided to the institute; and

     WHEREAS, named to the leadership helm of the Barksdale Reading Institute at its inception in 2000, Mr. Barksdale has helped improve the literacy skills of Mississippi schoolchildren, who are vital to the state's future; and

     WHEREAS, prior to his work at BRI, he practiced law in Jackson, Mississippi, worked for United States Senator Thad Cochran in Washington, D.C., served as associate general counsel for BellSouth Cellular Corporation in Atlanta, Georgia, and clerked for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, Louisiana; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Barksdale also taught English for one year in a public high school in Jackson, Mississippi, and he was on the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Children's Museum, Chairman of The Parents' Campaign, and he serves on the advisory board of Mississippi Building Blocks; and

     WHEREAS, upon announcing his retirement plans, Mr. Barksdale indicated his plans to continue working with The Parents' Campaign and Mississippi Building Blocks, and stated, "I'm 63, and I want to continue to be involved in education issues, but there are some other things I want to do as well, and this will free up my time to pursue those other interests."; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend the tireless devotion to education and literacy of the children of the State of Mississippi as demonstrated by Mr. Barksdale:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the distinguished career and exemplary leadership and service Mr. Claiborne Barksdale provided as Chief Executive Officer of the Barksdale Reading Institute upon the occasion of his retirement, and extend to him most sincere wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Claiborne Barksdale and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
