A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE WEST TALLAHATCHIE HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM UPON COMPLETING AN UNDEFEATED 34-0 SEASON AND WINNING THE CLASS 2A MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, on March 11, 2016, the West Tallahatchie High School Choctaws won the Class 2A Mississippi High School Activities Association State Championship, defeating the Coahoma Agricultural High School Aggies 52-43, earning the Choctaws a permanent place in the annals of their school's athletic history books and their school's first basketball state championship; and

     WHEREAS, the Choctaws proved their dominance throughout the season, winning all 27 regular season games without suffering a loss; this feat represents the first time a Tallahatchie County team has finished a regular season without a loss; and

     WHEREAS, in having achieved perfection, the West Tallahatchie High School Choctaws are the first team to finish a season 34-0 in the State of Mississippi over the last 31 years; and

     WHEREAS, throughout their meteoric season, the Choctaws played with unyielding commitment to teamwork and dedication, improving themselves and their team throughout the season; their commitment to excellence is evidenced by their undefeated record; and

     WHEREAS, facing the Aggies with the possibility of winning their first state championship, the Choctaws trailed for almost three quarters before their never say die attitude prevailed; going on a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter, they established a lead they would not relinquish, and at the sound of the final buzzer, the team's date with destiny was complete, and immortality was achieved as they lifted the MHSAA State Championship trophy high above their heads; and

     WHEREAS, their championship roster includes:  D'Andre Houston, Malik Bailey, Lacedric Hines, Marquis Orange Jr., Dan Locke IV, Timyus Roebuck, Devunta Houston, Edgar Scott, Rajes Hodges, Tyler Berryhill, Justin Wilson, Frank Johnson, Javaris O'Bryant, Naythan Hill, Kenterrace Speight and Milton McGee Jr.; and 

     WHEREAS, the 2015-2016 championship team was led by Head Coach Bernard Berryhill, Assistant Coach Timothy Abram, Manager Tayler Berryhill and Statistician Derrion Pigue; and

     WHEREAS, committed to excellence on and off the basketball court, the 2015-2016 Choctaws further distinguished themselves by earning the Scholar Athlete Team Award for maintaining an overall GPA of better than 3.0; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and honor the achievements of student athletes such as the West Tallahatchie High School Choctaws Boys Basketball Team who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the West Tallahatchie High School Choctaws Boys Basketball Team upon completing an excellent 34-0 season, capturing the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 2A State Championship and extend best wishes to the team and coaches for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach Bernard Berryhill, West Tallahatchie High School Principal Christopher Furdge and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
