Senate Bill 3086

AN ACT TO AUTHORIZE THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF DESOTO COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, TO EXTEND THE QUALIFYING DEADLINE FOR PRIMARY AND GENERAL ELECTIONS OCCURRING IN CALENDAR YEAR 2011 UNTIL JUNE 1, 2011, FOR CANDIDATES FOR THE OFFICE OF COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION, CONSTABLE, JUSTICE COURT JUDGE AND BOARD OF SUPERVISORS; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.

     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:

     SECTION 1.  For primary and general elections occurring in calendar year 2011, the Board of Supervisors of DeSoto County, Mississippi, is authorized and empowered, in its discretion, by order duly adopted and entered upon it minutes, to extend until June 1, 2011, the qualifying deadline for candidates for the following elective offices in DeSoto County:

          (a)  County board of education;

          (b)  Constable;

          (c)  Justice court judge; and

          (d)  Board of supervisors.

     SECTION 2.  The Board of Supervisors of DeSoto County, Mississippi shall submit this act, immediately upon approval by the Governor, or upon approval by the Legislature subsequent to a veto, to the Attorney General of the United States or to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia in accordance with the provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.

     SECTION 3.  This act shall take effect and be in force from and after the date it is effectuated under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended and extended.
