Senate Concurrent Resolution 504

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS AND CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF FORMER MISSISSIPPI SENATE COMPTROLLER SUE ROSE JOHNSEY DENNY.

     WHEREAS, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Sue Rose Johnsey Denny, 84, passed away Friday, April 19, 2013; and

     WHEREAS, Sue was born November 19, 1928, to William Clyde and Sue Johnsey, growing up in Greenville, South Carolina.  Sue was an Alumnus of Winthrop University, formerly Winthrop College of Rock Hill, South Carolina; and

     WHEREAS, Sue met William C. (Bill) Denney (Representative, District 64) during the Korean War when Bill was stationed in her hometown.  They married April 19, 1952, and moved to Jackson in 1963; and

     WHEREAS, Sue served her beloved State of Mississippi as Comptroller for the Mississippi State Senate for 30 years.  She was very active in social and civic affairs.  Sue loved people and continually offered help and encouragement to anyone in need, always putting others before herself.  Throughout her life and career, Sue was a very devoted wife and mother to her family and Christian faith; and

     WHEREAS, Sue never met a stranger in her life, and was an energetic, outgoing and loyal person who exemplified characteristics of a "Southern Lady"; and

     WHEREAS, Sue was a great sports fan and a wonderful athlete who enjoyed watching her grandchildren excel in sports.  She taught dancing and tennis while in college, played softball, golf, and was on the swim team; and

     WHEREAS, survivors include her husband of 61 years on the anniversary date of her death; children include:  Anne (Sweetie) Piazza (Sam), Kitty Howell, William C. (Billy) III (Debbie), and Sally Dobbs (David).  Grandchildren include:  Travis Pope, Clancy Piazza, Ryan Eaves, Lesley and Kristy Howell, Will and Matt Denny, Kristin, Ashley, and Lindsey Dobbs.  Great-grandchildren include:  Branson and Anna Rose Eaves, and Christian Howell; and

     WHEREAS, we pay tribute and cherish fondly the memory of our friend and most public spirited citizen of Mississippi, whose enormous civic energy was a wonderful example for all Mississippians:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and celebrate the life of former Mississippi Senate Comptroller Sue Rose Johnsey Denny, and extend our sympathy to her surviving family and the thanks of a grateful Legislature for sharing Sue with us.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Sue Denny and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
