MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

2019 Regular Session

To: Rules

By: Senator(s) Blount, Blackmon, Michel

Senate Concurrent Resolution 519

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE ST. ANDREW'S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL "SAINTS" BASEBALL TEAM AND COACH MARK FANNING FOR WINNING ITS FIRST 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN 33 YEARS.

WHEREAS, on May 17, 2018, the large contingent of St. Andrew's fans at Trustmark Park held their breath, but it was over:  Sam Roffwarg came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Banks Tolley and set off a raucous celebration that reached a fever pitch when the Saints lifted the 3A Championship Trophy.  The ball in the outfield won the game and ended a 33-year drought in state titles for one of the best programs in 3A.  The Saints (33-6) defeated North Pontotoc 3-2; and

WHEREAS, St. Andrew's won five one-run ballgames in the postseason thanks to some stellar pitching performances, but none will be remembered like C.J. Carron's final startThe senior went all eight innings to pick up his ninth win of the season, allowing two earned runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.  Once they tied the game, it was just a matter of time.  The 2018 Saints thrived on the pressure of one-run ballgames; and

WHEREAS, "I know this is the fifth one-run ballgame of the playoffs, and the postseason already adds intensity to every moment," St. Andrew's Coach Mark Fanning said.  For Fanning, it was his first State Championship as a Coach in 21 years.  The Saints had only missed the playoffs once in those 21 seasons, and they had been to the State Championship Series three times:  2001, 2009 and 2016 without winning.  But this team was different; and

WHEREAS, the St. Andrew's Episcopal School "Saints" Baseball Championship Team Roster:  Brett Ashy, Nathan Barham, Charley Blount, Evan Bowman, C.J. Carron, Aaron Cooper, Cameron Daniels, David DuCote, Jack Ferguson, Trey Hebert, Tanner Hendrix, Walter Johnson, Seth McCaughan, Jake Mitchell, Dickson Ray, Sam Roffwarg, Avery Thomas, Banks Tolley, Holland Townes, John Mychal Warren, Web Watkins, and Noel Wiggs; Head Coach Mark Fanning; and Assistant Coaches Joshua Parks, Dolph Woodall and Chris Burgess; and

WHEREAS, the Baseball Program at St. Andrew's has had many successes over the years.  St. Andrew's has been fortunate enough to consistently have elite players, and it is with great pride that we recognize these student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby congratulate the St. Andrew's Episcopal School "Saints" Baseball Team and Coach Mark Fanning for winning its first 3A State Championship in 33 years and extend to the players, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Fanning, St. Andrew's retired Head of School Dr. George Penick and St. Andrew's Head of School, Tom Sheppard, forwarded to the St. Andrew's Board of Trustees, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
