MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE

2023 Regular Session

To: Rules

By: Senator(s) Butler (38th)

Senate Concurrent Resolution 538

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE PARKLANE ACADEMY "LADY PIONEERS" FAST-PITCH SOFTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH GREG GATLIN FOR WINNING THE 2022 MAIS CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WHICH WAS THE TEAM'S FOURTH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RING IN THE LAST SIX YEARS.

WHEREAS, "PUT ANOTHER RING ON IT."  Parklane Academy held a Championship Ring Ceremony on January 11, 2023, in the school's gym to commemorate the "Lady Pioneers" for their 2022 MAIS Class 6A Fast-Pitch Softball Championship.  It was the girls' fourth State Championship Ring in the last six years under Head Coach Greg Gatlin; and

WHEREAS, every ring has a special meaning to Coach Gatlin due to the unique journey it took to earn it.  The 2023 Championship Ring is special because it represents Parklane's resiliency.  After suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Hartfield in the final game of a best two out of three series in the 2021 State Championship series, the Lady Pioneers made it their mission to prove themselves this season; and

WHEREAS, the result of that attitude was a 27-2 season that was capped off with a 7-2 win over Jackson Prep to sweep the Lady Patriots 2-0 and bring the state championship back to Pike County; and

WHEREAS, few were as excited about the title run as senior pitcher Skye Sharp, one of the most decorated athletes in Parklane's history, who wanted to make sure she went out on top; and

WHEREAS, "Never gets old," Gatlin said.  "It's a great day and a lot of fun for the kids"; and

WHEREAS, Parklane's roster this past season was mostly made up of underclassmen, providing a nice foundation that could bring home a few more championships in the coming years.  The 2022 Parklane Academy "Pioneers" Softball Roster includes:  Carlyle Carruth, Skye Sharp, AB Hemphill, Camryn Poole, Issie Coker, Kerrington Weekley, Sara Harden, Kaylea Wagner, Halle Bennett, Brooklyn Wagner, Phiffer Crawford, Macy Simmons, Gigi Lindsey, Madison Haye, Mack Smith, Bella Givens, Zoe Alford, Hannah Turner, Adalie Terrell, Taylor Magee, Finley Crawford, Liberty Gillihan and Anna Sawyer; Head Coach Greg Gatlin and Assistant Coach Sam Richard; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Parklane Academy "Lady Pioneers" Fast-Pitch Softball Team and Head Coach Greg Gatlin for winning the 2022 MAIS Class 6A State Championship which was the team's fourth State Championship Ring in the last six years, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Head Coach Greg Gatlin for the Lady Pioneers team, forwarded to Parklane Academy Administrator Jack Henderson and the Board of Trustees, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
