A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE BOONEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL "LADY BLUE DEVILS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND SUBSTITUTE COACH MICHAEL SMITH FOR WINNING ITS FIRST MHSAA CLASS 3A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN PROGRAM HISTORY.
WHEREAS, Dashiyah Agnew scored a game-high 20 points, and Booneville High School "Lady Blue Devils" Girls Basketball Team won its first Basketball Championship in program history despite an abrupt coaching change in October and a late rally on March 14, 2014, to hold off Belmont 56-51 in the Class 3A MHSAA Girls State Basketball Championship at the Mississippi Coliseum; and
WHEREAS, Coach Michael Smith did not expect to make an appearance in Jackson this season, much less with the girls team. But that changed in October when the former coach stepped down from his position and in came Michael Smith, the boys' basketball coach who led the Blue Devils to a 3A Boys Title in 2011 and runner-up finishes the last two years; and
WHEREAS, Booneville (28-6) smothered Belmont in the first quarter, racing out to a nine-point lead before grabbing a 34-23 cushion by halftime. The Lady Cardinals rallied back, but Booneville responded with a 10-2 run, five of which came from Agnew, to seal the victory. Young posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Devils. Maleeka Patterson almost had one of her own after scoring 9 and 10, respectively; and
WHEREAS, the 2013-2014 "Lady Blue Devils" Girls Basketball Team Roster is: Adallice Young, Kabrina Hill, Dashiyah Agnew, Zoe Anglin, Lexie Michael, Kristen Perrigo, Maria Lauderdale, Shmia Williams, Kaylee Stephenson, Maleeka Patterson, Ali Martin, Madison Davis, A.J. Jackson, Dee Friar, and Cora Geno; and Head Coach Michael Smith; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes and their dedicated Coach who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Booneville High School "Lady Blue Devils" Girls Basketball Team and substitute Coach Michael Smith for winning its first MHSAA Class 3A State Championship in program history, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Smith and Booneville Principal Terry King for the team, forwarded to the Booneville School District Board of Trustees and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
