Senate Concurrent Resolution 632

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE PELAHATCHIE HIGH SCHOOL "LADY CHIEFS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH PEARLENE FAIRLEY FOR WINNING THEIR FIRST CLASS 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN 46 YEARS.

WHEREAS, Coach Pearlene Fairley never had this moment as a player.  On March 13, 2015, Coach Fairley wrapped her arms around the Gold Ball Trophy, smiling as Pelahatchie claimed the MHSAA Class 1A Girls State Championship at the Mississippi Coliseum for the first time since 1969; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Chiefs took the 54-48 victory over Ashland, another team that had not won a State Title since the late 1960s; and

WHEREAS, "It's unbelievable," said Coach Fairley, who played for the Lady Chiefs in the 1980s.  "I played here.  We didn't get to the Championship.  To be the Coach to bring them here, it's an amazing feeling"; and

WHEREAS, that trophy seemed to be slipping away from the Lady Chiefs (26-6) after halftime.  However, Pelahatchie went on a late third-quarter run and carried the momentum into the final quarter.  April Ticer opened the fourth quarter with a layup and foul, and completed the three-point play.  Teammate Brittany Thompson then followed with another layup to regain the 41-39 lead.  Thompson, the lone senior starter, finished with 16 points.  Ticer added 11 and Janae Collier scored 15; and

WHEREAS, the key player in the Championship Game was Brittany Thompson.  The 5-foot-9 senior scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds; and

WHEREAS, the 2014-2015 Pelahatchie High School "Lady Chiefs" Girls Basketball Team Roster is:  Aubree Beeman, Kanosha Holifield, Kandis King, Morghan Hobson, Haley Jones, Janae Collier, Taquila Beeman, Brittany Thompson, Alexis Hobson, Courtney McGee, Jamiyah Stokes, April Ticer and Talieeka Mazique; and Head Coach Pearlene Fairley; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Pelahatchie High School "Lady Chiefs" Girls Basketball Team and Coach Pearlene Fairley for winning the 2015 MHSAA Class 1A State Championship which is its first State Title in 46 years, and extend our best wishes for future athletic and academic success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Pelahatchie High School Coach Pearlene Fairly, Principal Dr. Bryan Marshall, forwarded to the Rankin County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
