A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND SALUTING THE RECORD OF PUBLIC SERVICE OF LONGTIME PORT GIBSON ALDERMAN AND CIVIC LEADER REVEREND EDDIE WALLS, JR.

     WHEREAS, Reverend Eddie Walls, Jr., of Claiborne County, Mississippi, has been in the ministry for over 40 years, was an influential Civic Leader in Claiborne County, and was a Veteran of the United States Army; and

     WHEREAS, Reverend Eddie Walls, Jr., is a native of Claiborne County.  Reverend Eddie Walls was born March 24, 1928, to the late Eddie and Carrie Walls.  His early education includes the Romola School, Old St. Mark School and the Claiborne County Training School.  He furthered his education at Alcorn College located in Lorman, Mississippi.  On August 15, 1944, he joined Greater St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church; and

     WHEREAS, on September 26, 1956, he was united in holy matrimony to the late Lessie Paris.  To this union three children were born:  Linda, Eddie III and Janice.  He has five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and

     WHEREAS, Reverend Eddie Walls, Jr., serves as the Minister to two congregations.  He was elected October 1976 at New Come & See Missionary Baptist Church, having now served 34 years; and the Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, having served 25 years; and

     WHEREAS, as a citizen, he still finds the time to be involved

in community activities.  He was past President of the NAACP, where he led the charge during the Port Gibson Boycott for 12 years.  The United States Supreme Court rendered a decision in favor of the citizens of Port Gibson.  He was also part of a group that filed a suit to stop At-Large elections in Port Gibson which was won by the citizens of Port Gibson.  He was past President of the Parent Teacher Student Association for nine years.  He was one of the first African-American elected officials in the City of Port Gibson to serve on the Board of Alderman.  He was elected as Alderman in 1987 and served until he retired December 2011; and

     WHEREAS, he was given an Honorary Doctorate in September 2010 by the Claiborne County Baptist Association; and

     WHEREAS, during his many years of dedicated service to this community, Reverend Eddie Walls, Jr., has proven himself to be a God-sent man; and it is with great pride that we commend this record of achievement and legacy of leadership and dedication to all in Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby join the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of Port Gibson, Mississippi, in recognizing and saluting the record of public service and charitable and civic contributions of Reverend Eddie Walls, Jr., and extend our best wishes to Reverend Walls and his family on the occasion of "Reverend Eddie Walls, Jr., Day in Port Gibson."

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Reverend Walls, forwarded to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of Port Gibson and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
