SYNOPSIS

     Requires installation of safety light on school buses.

An Act concerning school bus safety and supplementing chapter 3B of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.  Beginning on September 1 of the year next following the enactment of P.L.    , c.    (C.        ) (pending before the Legislature as this bill), but in no case less than 180 days, every school bus as defined in R.S.39:1-1 in operation and every new or used school bus purchased on or after that date shall be equipped with a white flashing safety light on the roof of the bus.  The flashing safety light shall be activated at all times while the school bus is in operation.

 

     2.  The State Board of Education, in consultation with the Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission in the Department of Transportation shall adopt rules and regulations pursuant to the "Administrative Procedure Act," P.L.1968, c.410 (C.52:14B-1 et seq.), necessary to effectuate the purposes of this act.

 

     3.  This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires every school bus in operation on the effective date of the act and every new or used school bus purchased on or after that date to be equipped with a white flashing safety light on the roof of the bus.  The safety light is required to be activated at all times while the school bus is in operation.  Its purpose is to make certain that the school bus is visible to other drivers.  This measure will help to ensure the safe transport of the State's students.
