SYNOPSIS

Urges U.S. Postal Service to continue Freehold Borough post office.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Senate Resolution urging the United States Postal Service to continue operation of the Freehold Borough post office.

Whereas, Freehold Borough serves as the county seat for the County of Monmouth, State of New Jersey, serving many governmental offices, including the Monmouth County Courthouse; and

Whereas, Freehold Borough serves as the focal point of commerce, law, government, and social services for the County of Monmouth, hosting numerous businesses, restaurants, and professionals that produce a significant demand for postal services; and

Whereas, The United States Postmaster General has issued a consolidation order which would likely result in closure of the Freehold Borough post office, resulting in a severe burden on the Borough residents, businesses, and governmental offices; and

Whereas, The Freehold Borough post office consists of only a trailer, which is cost-effectively managed, requiring no rental or lease payment for operations since the County of Monmouth provides the land to accommodate the trailer; and

Whereas, Closure of the Freehold Borough post office will greatly increase the demand for services on the already burdened Freehold Township post office and create a hardship for residents who will have difficulty accessing the Freehold Township post office; and

Whereas, The continued operation of the Freehold Borough post office has been endorsed by Congressman Christopher H. Smith, the State of New Jersey 12th Legislative District Representatives, the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Township of Freehold, the Borough of Freehold, the Freehold Borough Downtown Business District (Freehold Center Partnership), and the Asbury Park Press; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    The Senate urges the United States Postal Service to continue operation of the Freehold Borough post office located at 13 Lafayette Street in Freehold Borough, Monmouth County, New Jersey.

     2.    A duly authenticated copy of this resolution, signed by the President of the Senate and attested to by the Secretary thereof, shall be transmitted to the Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service, to the Postmaster General, and to each member of Congress elected from this State.

STATEMENT

This Senate resolution urges the United States Postal Service to continue the operation of the post office branch located at 13 Lafayette Street in Freehold Borough, which is the county seat of Monmouth County, New Jersey.  The central location of this branch in the heart of downtown Freehold Borough makes it a significant component of the services provided to businesses, government offices and residents.  The closing of this branch will result in severe and irreversible consequences to these businesses, residents, and government offices.
