Whereas, Mr. Jerry Iacona, a retired New Jersey school teacher with more than 30 years experience as a 4th grade teacher in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, has developed an innovative aerospace and model rocketry program that enables elementary school students to design, build, and ultimately launch their own model rockets; and

Whereas, Such programs support the fulfillment of the core curriculum content standards, particularly in the areas of science, language arts literacy, and career education and consumer, family, and life skills, while introducing students to the exciting field of aeronautical science and rocketry; and

Whereas, Aerospace programs also introduce students to aeronautical science and rocketry through a review of their history and a discussion of how major discoveries and events have advanced science and technology; and

Whereas, These programs provide instruction on the principles of rocketry, Newton's laws of motion, and the scientific method as well as preparation activities for rocket building; and

Whereas, Students then have an opportunity to apply their newly gained knowledge through the design and hands-on development of their own model rockets, using critical thinking, problem solving, math, and writing skills; and

Whereas, Aerospace and rocketry programs demonstrate the principles of aeronautical science and rocketry to students through a fun and dynamic instructional experience; now, therefore,

STATEMENT

This Senate resolution urges school districts to adopt and implement an aerospace and model rocketry program.  Mr. Jerry Iacona, a retired New Jersey school teacher, has developed such a program, which is an innovative one-week education program that enables elementary school students to design, build, and ultimately launch their own model rockets.  In addition to introducing students to a new area of science, aerospace and model rocketry programs develop students' critical thinking, problem solving, math, and writing skills.  The implementation of such a program in each school district would support the fulfillment of the core curriculum content standards through a fun and dynamic instructional experience.
