Summary

The purpose of this legislation is to protect New York citizens from drunk drivers. Nationally, there are nearly 17,000 deaths from drinking and driving related incidents. From 1999-2004, in Westchester County alone, there were 2,190 alcohol-related vehicle accidents, 89 of which resulted in fatalities. This bill provides an increased deterrent to prevent drivers from getting behind the wheel while intoxicated, which will, in turn, lead to safer roads in New York and fewer fatalities.
