Senate Resolution No. 147 BY: Senator JACOBS HONORING Ann Evanko upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the 2019 Edwin F. Jaeckle Award by the University at Buffalo School of Law WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Ann Evanko upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the 2019 Edwin F. Jaeckle Award by the University at Buffalo School of Law, to be celebrated at its Annual Alumni Luncheon on Friday, February 1, 2019, at the Buffalo Club, Buffalo, New York; and WHEREAS, The highest honor the UB School of Law and the UB Law Alumni Association can bestow, the Jaeckle Award is given annually to a person who exemplifies the highest ideals of the law school and its alumni association, and who has made significant contributions to the school and the legal profession; Ann Evanko is one such individual; and WHEREAS, A 1979 graduate of the University at Buffalo School of Law, Ann Evanko is the first female attorney hired by Hurwitz & Fine P.C.; she has led the Buffalo-based law firm, with offices in Albany, Toronto, Palm Beach, Long Island and Lake Placid, as its president since 2008; and WHEREAS, Ann Evanko focuses her practice on employment law, business and commercial litigation; she is also a highly regarded mediator in both the boardroom and the courtroom, particularly for complex business, commercial and employment disputes; and WHEREAS, Identified by Buffalo's Business First as one of the most powerful and influential people in Western New York, Ann Evanko has also been named to the "Power 50" list, which recognizes the men and women who "wield the most clout in the region," as well as the "Power 250" list which showcases the region's most influential and powerful women; and WHEREAS, In 2016, Business First honored Ann Evanko with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Women of Influence for her contributions to the community, to the women-focused charitable organizations she champions, and to her firm; she was previously recognized with the inaugural Business First Women Who Mean Business Award; and WHEREAS, Ann Evanko is a founder and past president of the Western New York Chapter of the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York, and served as a member of the board of directors, vice president, treasurer, and chair of the finance committee for the New York State Women's Bar Association; and WHEREAS, This extraordinary woman is the immediate past chair of the board of directors for the WNY Women's Foundation, where she continues to serve on its board of directors, as well as the governance and finance committees; she is also a member of the board of directors of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership and was the 2008 recipient of the Athena Award; and WHEREAS, Prior to law school, Ann Evanko earned her master's degree in history from the University at Buffalo in 1973; she has maintained close ties with the law school throughout her illustrious legal career, co-chairing the School of Law's Annual Fund in 2013, and serving on the Dean's Advisory Council since 2014; and WHEREAS, Furthermore, she is the 2015 recipient of the Law Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni Award for Community Service, and is an active leader and promoter of the law school's mentor program; and WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to Ann Evanko, that future generations may know and appreciate her admirable character, her many benevolent deeds, and the respect and esteem in which she is held by her peers; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Ann Evanko upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the 2019 Edwin F. Jaeckle Award by the University at Buffalo School of Law; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Ann Evanko.
