A RESOLUTION

Designating April 2009 as "Sexual Assault Awareness Month" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, One in four women and one in six men are sexually

4

assaulted in their lifetimes; and

5

WHEREAS, Eighty-four percent of rapes are not reported to law

6

enforcement; and

7

WHEREAS, Twenty percent of persons between 10 and 17 years of

8

age receive unwanted sexual solicitations while using the

9

Internet; and

10

WHEREAS, Sexual violence places survivors at a significantly

11

higher risk of experiencing long-term health issues, including

12

the increased risk of suicide, eating disorders, substance

13

abuse, low self-esteem and posttraumatic stress disorder; and

14

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR) is

the oldest antisexual violence coalition in the country; and

2

WHEREAS, PCAR's Statewide network of 52 rape crisis centers

3

provides counseling, crisis intervention, referral services,

4

hospital, court and police accompaniment, prevention education,

5

community outreach and crisis support 24 hours a day; and

6

WHEREAS, In this Commonwealth, more than 22,000 children

7

become victims of child sexual abuse each year; and

8

WHEREAS, More than 302,000 women and 92,000 men are raped in

9

the United States each year; and

10

WHEREAS, Dedicated advocates and volunteers work to eliminate

11

sexual violence and provide support to victims; therefore be it

12

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April

13

2009 as "Sexual Assault Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania; and be

14

it further

15

RESOLVED, That all residents of this Commonwealth be

16

encouraged to combine their resources and skills and pledge to

17

become part of the solution to end sexual violence in this

18

Commonwealth.
