A RESOLUTION

Congratulating the Pittsburgh Steelers for winning the 2008 AFC

2

Championship and wishing them well in competing in Super Bowl

3

XLIII.

WHEREAS, A National Football League (NFL) franchise was

5

founded on July 8, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by the

6

late Arthur Joseph Rooney, one of the pioneers of the American

7

professional sports world, who is enshrined in the Professional

8

Football Hall of Fame and remembered as one of the City of

9

Pittsburgh's great citizens; and

10

WHEREAS, The franchise, originally named the Pittsburgh

11

Pirates and later renamed the Pittsburgh Steelers to reflect the

city's prominence as a steelmaking center, is now the fifth-

2

oldest franchise in the NFL; and

3

WHEREAS, Over the last eight decades, the Steelers have

4

become a beloved part of the City of Pittsburgh and have brought

5

many great moments to the league and city; and

6

WHEREAS, Through draft selections in the 1970s, the Steelers

7

assembled a group of remarkably talented players, including many

8

future Hall of Fame inductees, to form one of the greatest NFL

9

teams in history, making the playoffs eight seasons in a row and

10

winning four Super Bowls; and

11

WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the franchise has captured

12

19 division championships, made 25 playoff appearances and won

13

seven conference championships and five league championships,

14

becoming the third team in NFL history to do so; and

15

WHEREAS, During the 2008 season, the Steelers secured the

16

second seed in the conference and advanced to the American

17

Football Conference Championship Game, where they defeated the

18

Baltimore Ravens 23-14 on January 18, 2009; and

19

WHEREAS, The Steelers will represent Pennsylvania in Super

20

Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009, in Tampa, Florida, at Raymond

21

James Stadium; and

22

WHEREAS, The Steelers have earned the admiration of the

23

residents of this Commonwealth for an outstanding season;

24

therefore be it

25

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the

26

Pittsburgh Steelers for winning the 2008 AFC Championship and

27

wish them well in competing in Super Bowl XLIII.
