| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating May 14, 2011, as "Letter Carrier Food Drive Day" in |
2 | Pennsylvania and commending the National Association of |
3 | Letter Carriers for its humanitarian efforts to eliminate |
4 | hunger. |
5 | WHEREAS, On Saturday, May 14, 2011, the National Association |
6 | of Letter Carriers (NALC) will conduct the 19th annual NALC |
7 | "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive to combat hunger; and |
8 | WHEREAS, This is the largest one-day food drive in the |
9 | nation, which is held in all 50 states and territories of the |
10 | United States; and |
11 | WHEREAS, On that day, letter carriers will collect |
12 | nonperishable donations as they deliver mail along their postal |
13 | routes; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Food will be collected in more than 10,000 |
15 | communities by nearly 1,500 local branches of the postal union, |

1 | along with rural carriers and other volunteers; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Donations will be delivered to food banks, pantries |
3 | and shelters that serve the area where the donations are |
4 | collected; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The summer months are a particularly critical time |
6 | for millions of children whose school lunch programs are |
7 | suspended until fall and their families must find alternate |
8 | sources of nutrition; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Letter carriers see these families every day as they |
10 | deliver the mail, and this food drive is one way to help |
11 | alleviate their plight; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Postal patrons are encouraged to participate by |
13 | leaving donations by their mailboxes on May 14, 2011; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Cosponsors of the drive are the United States Postal |
15 | Service, the Campbell Soup Company, Uncle Bob's Self Storage, |
16 | local United Ways, the AFL-CIO, the American Association of |
17 | Retired Persons, Valpak direct marketing firm and Feeding |
18 | America food bank network; and |
19 | WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1991, the nationwide drive |
20 | has collected and delivered close to one billion pounds of food |
21 | to help hungry families and, last year, carriers collected 77.1 |
22 | million pounds of food, which is the fourth consecutive year the |
23 | effort has exceeded 70 million pounds; therefore be it |
24 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 14, |
25 | 2011, as "Letter Carrier Food Drive Day" in Pennsylvania; and be |
26 | it further |
27 | RESOLVED, That the National Association of Letter Carriers |
28 | and its cosponsors be commended for their humanitarian efforts |
29 | to stamp out hunger; and be it further |
30 | RESOLVED, That the citizens of this Commonwealth be commended |

1 | for their past participation in this food drive and be |
2 | encouraged to generously contribute to this year's effort to |
3 | help feed the hungry. |
