A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the week of May 14 through 21, 2011, as "Armed

2

Forces Week" in Pennsylvania and encouraging the observance

3

of May 21, 2011, as "Armed Forces Day" in Pennsylvania.

4

WHEREAS, "Armed Forces Day," since it was created by

5

President Harry S. Truman in 1949, is annually celebrated on the

6

third Saturday of May as part of "Armed Forces Week," which runs

7

from the second Saturday to the third Sunday of May; and

8

WHEREAS, In 1962, President John F. Kennedy established

9

"Armed Forces Day" as an official holiday; and

10

WHEREAS, With pride in our nation's military strength and

11

successes, we acknowledge the members of the United States Army,

12

Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard and

Reserves and the government civilians and family members

2

supporting them; and

3

WHEREAS, There are approximately 1,580,255 active and 864,547

4

reserve United States military personnel stationed around the

5

globe; and

6

WHEREAS, It is the intent of the House of Representatives to

7

recognize the men and women of our armed forces for their

8

dedicated service to this Commonwealth and our nation and

9

commend them especially for the outstanding performance of their

10

duties in Iraq and Afghanistan, in the global war on terrorism

11

and in response to natural disasters; therefore be it

12

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

13

week of May 14 through 21, 2011, as "Armed Forces Week" in

14

Pennsylvania; and be it further

15

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage the

16

citizens of this Commonwealth to observe May 21, 2011, as "Armed

17

Forces Day" in Pennsylvania.
